Adjectives

Posted in By Nick Smith 0 comments

Adjectives are words that describe something.  A person can be old or young, short or tall, nice or mean, silly or serious, etc.  Objects can be red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple, and they can be square, circular, or triangular.

When we look at the adjectives that describe people, we find that many of them are subjective; they only work when the person being described can be compared to other people.  When you call a person tall, you’re not truly saying that they are tall; you are saying that they are tall compared to others.  If they were not taller than others, you would not describe them as tall.  This is the case of many (but not all) of the adjectives that we use to describe ourselves.

There are a few points I want to make with this.

Firstly, God gives everyone gifts and He delights in variety.  If you want to know of several ways that God delights in you, simply compile a list of adjectives about yourself.  Some people are funny, witty, and popular.  Others may be shy, smart, and introverted.  These traits are neither good nor bad.  God uses all of them and He delights in all of them.

Picture a scale with one trait on one end and its opposite on the other end (i.e. short/tall, serious/silly, introverted/extroverted).  God didn’t make us all the same.  That would be boring and we’d probably drive each other crazy.  God took all of those scales and he chose what would make up you – the unique combination that would make you special.

We sometimes look at these traits that God has given us and assign values to them.  Maybe we think it’s better to be tall than short or better to be popular than shy.  But God doesn’t view it that way.  He doesn’t make anything second rate.  To illustrate my point, consider Down Syndrome.  Many people consider Down Syndrome to be some horrible disease, but you know what?  I don’t know that I have ever seen a person with Down Syndrome who was not smiling.  I wish to God that I was that happy.  What a blessing.

My second point is this: since adjectives are used to compare ourselves to others, we need to be cautious that we do not become prideful.  We all have some trait or skill that exceeds other people.  If you want to keep your pride in check, just change who you’re comparing yourself to.  Instead of comparing yourself to others, compare yourself to God.  Now what adjectives can be used to describe you?  Certainly nothing flattering.

Lastly, there are some adjectives that don’t require comparisons.  You can describe a tomato as red without comparing it to a carrot.  When these adjectives are used with people, they describe our shared humanity.  We have all been sad, afraid, worried, and defeated and we have all been happy, courageous, calm, and victorious.  We need to never forget that we are all God’s children.  We are all sinful and need Jesus Christ.

Who knew that there was so much we could learn from a single type of word?

Step Up

At church yesterday, our worship leader shared a story that I found interesting. Apparently, when he was growing up, he would never sing in church because he was too embarrassed about his voice. This was the case all the way through high school, but then it finally changed in college. When he got to college, he was at a Christian student union during a worship event and there was a guy he knew who would just belt it out without reservation. What’s so special about that you ask? Well, this guy was a horrible, horrible singer. But the thing is, he didn’t seem to care. All he cared about was what God thought and he was singing from his heart knowing that it was a pleasing sound to God. This changed our worship leader’s perspective and made him realize what really mattered. He started singing.

Hearing this story, I recognized some parallels to my own life, which made me wonder if most of us can connect to this in some way. We all have things we are good at. Areas where we excel. Gifts. Maybe we don’t fully recognize their full potential or maybe we haven’t developed our gifts as far as others, but we DO have them. But in many cases, we don’t utilize our gifts (or maybe we don’t utilize our gifts to further God’s Kingdom).

Why is that, do you think? There are probably as many excuses as there are gifts. It could be that a person is self-conscious (like the worship leader), or maybe he doesn’t use his gift because he feels like he’s showing off when he uses it (because he excels more than others), or perhaps he’s too busy with this, that, and everything to find time to use the gift, but just knowing he is gifted feels like it’s enough.

But the thing is, God gave you your gifts for a reason. He has a purpose. And you are endangering that purpose when you chose to allow the excuse to subdue the gift.

We all make up different parts of the same body (Christ’s body). If God has gifted you as a leg, then the body not only wants you to be a leg, but it NEEDS you to be a leg. If you chose not to exercise that gift, you have disabled the body. Can the body still function? Sure. Can it function at full capacity without you? No.

The body needs you. Step up. (1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

God's Calling

In our time last night with our students, we discussed potential direction and what they wanted to study in the coming weeks. Honestly, I have been praying through about 10 different topics and could not really sense a clear direction. I narrowed it down to 4 and of those 4, 2 were really at the top of the list for myself.

Our students decided on taking a look at God's Calling in Life. I have mapped out the sessions, and we will be looking at spiritual gifts, God's call to salvation, holiness, service, missions, ministry, and whatever else God throws on my heart.

I am excited about where it will go and how God will use our times together to make His call known in life. I am very passionate about ALL followers of Jesus being in ministry. When God calls you to follow Him, He calls you to ministry. Whether you are a computer nerd, a doctor, or a trash man... you are in ministry - your "circles of influence" are unique and are set by God for you to do ministry.

So, this is where participation comes into this discussion...
What is your calling?
How were you called to that?
How has God placed you in a unique place to minister?
What way can you better utilize your platform to glorify God?
What vision do you have of future ministry? What is your God-dream?
